Why have disposable instruments?

Traditionally surgical instruments made of high quality steel, are made with high precision and thus are expensive. Once used, they then have to be sterilised in an approved sterilisation unit.

In the past, disposable surgical instruments were made of plastic and were often very difficult to use.

With new technologies, we are now able to obtain disposable metal surgical instruments which are virtually indistinguishable from their non-disposable alternatives.

 - Sterilisation:

With increasing numbers of viral infections - including Prion diseases such as CJD - Sterilisation has become an issue in healthcare. Small sterilisation machines are not recommended (and often not allowed) for surgical instruments that come into contact with tissue fluids or blood.

Therefore most clinics and hospitals need to send their sets of surgical instruments away to sterilisation units. However, this takes time and is increasingly expensive - particularly as there is a move to centralise sterilisation units. This will mean that clinics and hospitals will need even more sets whilst they wait for their sterilised sets to be returned.

 - Costs:

Now that steel disposable instruments are available in the range of UK £0.80 - £2.00 or Euro E 1.00 - E 4.00,  it has become less expensive to use disposable surgical instruments than to buy non-disposable instruments and get them sterilised after every case.

If you have a favourite surgical instrument that we do not currently have in our range, we will be able to commission manufacture of such an instrument and quote you for the cost of the disposable version.
